Heavy rains caused by an active Inter Tropical Zone on Sunday drenched Tobago leaving one toddler dead and flooded homes and business places, landslides and fallen power lines throughout the island.
The body of toddler Isabella Pacheco of Rockly Vale was recovered close to midnight on Sunday along a ravine in the Rockly Vale area.
Isabella and her mother, 36 year old Marcia Albert were crossing a ravine when she was alerted by a neighbour that her child was going down in the raging waters.
Members of the community formed a search party with fire service officers, members of CERT and THA Area Representative Ashworth Jack to look for the toddler along the ravine but abandoned it some hours later. The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. Isabella would have been two years old next week Saturday.
On Tuesday Jack made a tour of his constituency and surrounding areas to get a first hand look at the damage done by the rain and to assess the needs of those affected.
NEMA Tobago received at least 40 reports of incidents across the island on Sunday. By Monday workmen were seen cleaning up the offices of T&TEC, Scotiabank, Republic Bank and businesses along Carrington Street, Scarborough that were flooded out by an overflowing Crooks River.
Other areas affected by flood waters included Canaan/Bon Accord, Mason Hall, Hope Bay area, Englishman's Bay area and the Providence/Les Coteaux Road.
Tobago News reader Alan Porter said he recorded 7.5 inches of rain in Concordia between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday.
