Manswell gets ranking

Manswell gets ranking
Saturday, March 25th 2006
Trinidad Express

Trinidad and Tobago's rising heavyweight boxing prospect Kertson Manswell has made his first significant step toward a shot at the Commonwealth title by securing a ranking from the governing body.

The 29-year-old Manswell, undefeated in nine bouts with a 100 per cent knockout record, earns a top-25 spot in the Commonwealth ratings and is now eligible for an automatic shot at the title.

Dr Calvin Inalsingh, the Trinidadian President of FedeCaribe that oversees Caribbean professional boxing for the World Boxing Association (WBA), made representation on the boxer's behalf at a recent Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) meeting in Wales.

Inalsingh also made a case for other T&T boxers Jimmy Joseph and Kurt Sinette but Manswell was the only one of the trio to secure a rating.

"I was successful in getting Manswell rated in the list for the heavyweight contenders. The other boxers they said were generally inexperienced and their opponents were not too good," Dr Inalsingh told CMC Sport yesterday.

"Manswell, although he had (only) nine fights, the fact that he won two silver medals - at the Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games - as an amateur, gave a little more credit to him," Inalsingh added.

Dr Inalsingh explained that the CBC does not assign numerical ratings to boxers but lists a top-25 and so Manswell could land a shot at current champion Danny Williams, of Britain, at any given time.

"The Commonwealth is unlike other world organisations. They rank people in the 25 in alphabetic order, so it means if the champion wants to fight anybody to defend his title, he can go and look at that list and pick out an opponent.

"It's not like a number one, number two, number three contender. Everybody is equal to get a shot at the title," Dr Inalsingh said.

In his most recent bout, Manswell stopped Barbadian Curtis Murray in three rounds to continue boosting his sensational record that includes five first round knockouts.

Tobago retain national zonal 'track' title

Kern De Freitas

Friday, March 17th 2006

TOBAGO'S young athletes will return to the sister isle a jubilant bunch after defending their zonal Championship title with a hefty victory in the 2006 Guardian General/Ministry of Education National Track and Field Championships.

Well before the final event of the two-day Championships had been run yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Tobago already had an unassailable lead over second place North East, who had put an even more considerable distance between themselves and third-placed St George's West.

The top three zones dominated the relay events, the 4x400 metres yesterday and the 4x100 on Wednesday, first day of competition.

Tobago took the Girls Under-15 4x400m race in 4:27.73 just ahead of North East.

Both the Boys Under-15 and Girls Under-17 4x400 relays were won by St George's Central and North East, respectively. Victoria (Boys Under-17), Caroni (Girls Under-20) and St George'3.s West (Boys Under-20) won yesterday's other 4x400 relays.

St George's West had the best performances in the 200-metre events.

Tranquility Government's Michelle Lee Ahyee streaked to an impressive victory in the Girls Under-15 200m final in 24.60 and Jonathan Holder of QRC (23.86) took the Boys Under-14 version.

Bishop's Anstey High's Sade St Louis took the Under-20 200m title in 24.08.

Over 5000m, Belmont Boys' Neil Francois gave St George's West the win in 16:24.96, and Samantha Shukla (11:25.82) of South East POS was no surprise in snatching the Girls 3000m title ahead of Success/Laventille's Shermin Lasaldo (11:36.34) in the absence of Championships record-holder, the injured Pilar McShine.

Tobagonians in 'Panama' quarters
Shammi Kowlessar
Friday, March 17th 2006, Trinidad Express

TOBAGONIANS Yolande Leacock and Yohansey Williams scored impressive victories in Panama on Wednesday night to advance to the quarterfinals.

Olivia Bennett failed in her quest to reach the final eight of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Panama Bowl.

After beating American Stephanie Kent 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 on Tuesday to reach the "round of 16", third-seeded Bennett was upset 6-3, 6-4 by Ekaterina Mezhiritskaya.

The 15-year-old Trinidadian had comfortably defeated the Russian (6-2, 6-2) at this very stage last week in Costa Rica before going under in the second leg of the three-stage junior circuit.

Leacock, who turned in a horrendous performance in Costa Rica by winning one game in her first match as No. 2 seed, cruised into the quarters with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jacklyn Lambert of Bermuda.

The United States-based player is seeded to win this week's under-18 event and is also seeded No. 1 in doubles with fellow US-based 15-year-old, Bennett.

After losing a grand total of one game from two matches they were scheduled to play semifinals last night-following the singles quarters.

Williams, based in the United States part-time, whipped Venezuelan Hector D'Armas 6-1, 7-6 (7/2) to reach the last eight.

The 17-year-old went out in the first round in Costa Rica after not competing in the opening stage.

Leacock also missed the El Salvador leg but Bennett reached the singles quarters and doubles semis before being forced to withdraw because of food poisoning.
