On the issue of the song being sampled, Legerton said the rule which
disqualifies sampled songs for the Road March was looked at in
relation to the winning composition. But he said the song stood the
test. No more than eight bars of the sampled song was incorporated in
the Road March composition, he explained.
"I checked with all the players involved in the song, in particular to Kernel Roberts and Liz Montano, and I also spoke with musicologists across the country and even got a legal opinion and discovered that based on international laws, eight bars of a song can be used, and that is the crux of the matter." He added too that a new incentive will be given from next year to discourage sampling. "We do not want to go after the youngsters and tell them don't sample but we are adding an incentive of between $60,000 to $100,000 to the Road March contestant most played on the road with no sampled music."

Road March frontrunners
Wayne Bowman
Sunday, February 19th 2006
We enter the home stretch towards J'Ouvert C2K6 today and once the Merry Monarch is released to reign on the streets of the nation for those two days of glorious freedom. As the masses take to the streets the count will begin for the song that will take stand out as the most popular of them all - The Road March. This selection process, however, actually begins long before Camboulay, in the fetes, on radio and more recently television.
Whether or not the winner is still the people's choice is under great debate as artistes and other players in the soca fraternity accuse the DJ's of forcing certain songs down the people's throats, playing songs they have been ordered to by that invisible Soca Mafia we keep hearing about.
What benefits the DJ's derive from creating an artificial Road March is beyond us, but the things that come to pass as compared to what was there at the beginning can leave one wondering. At the end of the day the bottom line is that some people will agree with what song wins the Road March title, while others will disagree. Which group is in the majority is another story.
An obvious frontrunner in the race to the Road March is "Soca Warrior" by Maximus Dan Maximus has had thousands chanting the various hook lines of the song in the fetes throughout the season. Radio slowed up on the frequency of airplay given the song at the beginning if the year, but this failed to kill its effectiveness. A recently released remix injected new life into the song, which never grew old anyway.
Destra Garcia has over the past four years very nearly savoured the sweet taste of victory only to be left in the shade by another. Destra is again knocking on the door with "Max It Up", which has the support of the ladies. KMC too had the title in his sights last year with "First Experience" before he was knocked aside by Shurwayne Winchester. This year KMC has three runners in the race; "This Is How We Do It", "3-Mile" and "This Season Is Mine."
Machel Montano won the Road March title in 1997 with "Big Truck", now considered a classic. He is a strong contender with "Band Of The Year", which he recorded alongside Patrice Roberts. Montano is also featured on Zan's big song, "Heart Of A Man," which is making strides towards the finish line. This song likens the world to a human body, identifying Trinidad and Tobago as the heart.
Early in the season Mr Vybe was said to have to strong contender in his song "Ting For De Road" and although he just might be the man to give Bunji Garlin a run for his money at the Soca Monarch final, the road may prove elusive for the talented singer. As for Garlin who has said he will never win a Road March, he is actually a minor challenger through "Doi Festival", which he recorded alongside Sarika of JMC 3Veni.
The following are the current Road March standings based on a random poll with more than one hundred people on the streets in Port of Spain during the past week. Each person was asked what song they wanted to be the Road March for 2006. These are the results:
Top Ten Road March 2006 picks.

Big day for kaiso, pan

Saturday, February 18th 2006
One of the longest-running shows in Carnival, the Red Cross Kiddies Carnival, takes place today at the Queen's Park Savannah from 8 a.m., heralding a day in which the four major festival components are duly represented.
The Calypso Fiesta, semi-final of the National Calypso Monarch Competition, is also on today from noon at Skinner Park in San Fernando and at 6 p.m., outside Pan Trinbago's executive offices on Ariapita Avenue (opposite Victoria Square), the Panorama semi-final for single pan bands will be staged.
Thirty listed calypso competitors and one reserve will perform for the judges at Skinner Park, that activity historically witnessed by tens of thousands on location and many times that number via live television which, today, will be brought to viewers by CCN TV-6.
One of the originally selected competitors, Protector, who is concomitantly President of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO), has stepped down as a gracious response to grumbling about his "taking the place of another calypsonian who could have been in the contest."
Protector said he saw no good reason why TUCO officials could not be contestants in a competition run by the organisation, since its executive has no influence over the adjudication process. "I am a calypsonian first and my other responsibility should not suspend participation by officials in a contest involving the arts," Protector said.
In the single-pan playoffs, 33 of the 64 bands that performed in the preliminary round will each lay on its individual best this evening in the attempt to advance to the final round.
Defending champion, Arima All Stars will play last, putting in a guest performance, having been seeded directly to the final round, which will be played along with the final of the small bands contest next Thursday at Skinner Park, San Fernando.

Cro Cro out of Calypso Fiesta
Terry Joseph
Wednesday, February 15th 2006, Trinidad Express
http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article_news?id=136144117
Three-time National Calypso Monarch Cro Cro is adamant that "some kind of conspiracy" has resulted in his being eliminated from the 30 singers selected for Saturday's Calypso Fiesta, the semi-final round of competition for this year's crown.
"What they are saying by that list of calypsonians selected is that my songs for this year do not even qualify me to be a reserve," Cro Cro fumed. "It couldn't be that I am singing a song that won another competition last year for Independence because I called the president of TUCO to clear the air on that and was given the okay and, in fact, two other calypsonians picked for the semi-final are also singing songs they did at that same competition.
"I therefore have to conclude that it is the other song 'God Don't Sleep' that they do not want in their show, so they eliminate Cro Cro at this level to make sure there is no chance of hearing that song in the Dimanche Gras show. I don't know why I am always in trouble with judges but I believe is because I try to stick to the calypso tradition of singing about social or political issues with a little humour on the side.
"I love to compete. I don't ask any favours because my songs are constructed to elicit conversation. I didn't plan to make any confusion but a lot of people have been calling me to express concern that the songs for which I have been getting so many genuine encores in the tent wasn't good enough for the semi-final," Cro Cro said.
After hearing hundreds of hopefuls nationwide, the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) yesterday announced the names of 30 semi-finalists and two reserves for Saturday's Calypso Fiesta, the semi-final round of the National Calypso Monarch Competition.
The Fiesta, one of the major events in any Carnival season, again takes place at Skinner Park, San Fernando and is scheduled to get underway from noon.
A number of guest artistes are also on the evening's playbill for a show TUCO president Michael "Protector" Leggerton promises will be "as informative as it is entertaining".
Selected calypsonians are asked to contact TUCO's office for rehearsal details but should appear at NCC-TV tomorrow at 9.30 a.m. to draw for performance positions at Saturday's Fiesta.
